GeeChat is live

GeeChat doesn't have a "the server." Every community that runs GeeChat runs its own — a small self-hosted instance that belongs to them, not to us. There's no default, no fallback, no official deployment somewhere quietly holding everyone's data. If you want a GeeChat server, you stand one up. If you want to leave one, you just stop connecting to it.

That decision shapes basically everything else about how the app is built. Identity is a keypair generated on your own device, not an account on our servers, because there isn't one. Updates — both the desktop installer and Android builds — are the one piece we do host ourselves, since somebody has to publish the app itself. Everything past that point is yours.

This blog is where we'll post client updates, the occasional deep dive into something that took longer to fix than we'd like to admit, and anything else worth telling people who are already running a server. Grab a build on the download page and we'll see you in here again soon.
